Safety Roll Call

Manage and account for people during an Evacuation, Invacuation or Lockdown using Custr Safety Roll Call.

Overview

Safety Roll Call helps you see who is currently on site and manage people during an Evacuation, Invacuation or Lockdown.

You can open Safety Roll Call at any time to view the current on-site list without starting an event.

When required, you can select Start Roll Call to begin an active Safety Roll Call. This enables additional functionality, including marking people as safe, displaying the relevant procedure, sending notifications and using Messenger.

An active Safety Roll Call can be recorded as either a Drill or a Real Event.

Safety Roll Call can be accessed from the Custr Dashboard, Reception Kiosk and Custr Companion.

Safety Roll Call Types

When starting a Safety Roll Call, select the type that best matches the situation.

Evacuation

Use an Evacuation when people need to leave the building and move to the designated safe or assembly area.

Invacuation

Use an Invacuation when people need to remain within the building and move to a designated internal safe area.

Lockdown

Use a Lockdown when people need to remain in or move to a secure location and follow your site's lockdown procedure.

Lockdown also allows employees using Custr Companion to mark themselves and people they are with as safe.

Drill or Real Event

Each active Safety Roll Call is recorded as either a Drill or a Real Event.

Drill

For training, testing or practice.

Real Event

For an actual safety or security event.

Safety Roll Call works in the same way for both. The selection allows Drills and Real Events to be identified separately within Safety Roll Call Reports.

Safety Roll Call Permissions

Safety Roll Call permissions apply to logged-in users on the Custr Dashboard and Custr Companion.

Users with the Safety Roll Call permission can access the roll call list and mark people as safe during an active Evacuation or Invacuation.

During a Lockdown, employees using Custr Companion can also mark themselves and people they are with as safe, even if they do not have the Safety Roll Call permission.

The Reception Kiosk is site-based and does not require an individual user permission to access Safety Roll Call.

For more information, see Safety Roll Call Permissions.

Accessing Safety Roll Call

Safety Roll Call can be accessed from the Custr Dashboard, Reception Kiosk and Custr Companion.

Opening Safety Roll Call does not start an event. It allows you to view the people currently recorded as being on site.

From the Custr Dashboard

To access Safety Roll Call from the Dashboard:

  1. Log in to Custr.

  2. Select Safety Roll Call from the main navigation.

  3. View the current on-site roll call or select Start Roll Call when required.

From the Reception Kiosk

Safety Roll Call can also be accessed directly from the Reception Kiosk.

From here you can view the current on-site roll call or start an active Safety Roll Call.

The Reception Kiosk stores cached roll call information locally, allowing the list to remain available if the device temporarily loses its internet connection.

Important

  • Safety Roll Call on the Reception Kiosk is site-based and does not require an individual user permission.

  • Safety Roll Call permissions apply to logged-in Dashboard and Custr Companion users.

From Custr Companion

To access Safety Roll Call from Custr Companion:

  1. Open Custr Companion.

  2. Select Safety Roll Call.

  3. View the current on-site roll call or select Start Roll Call if you have the appropriate permission.

During an active Safety Roll Call, Companion can also be used to view procedures, access Messenger and mark people as safe where applicable.

Viewing the Current Roll Call

You do not need to start an active Safety Roll Call to see who is currently on site.

The standard Safety Roll Call view provides an up-to-date list of people recorded as being on site in Custr.

This can be useful for checking site occupancy at any time without:

  • Starting an Evacuation, Invacuation or Lockdown

  • Sending notifications

  • Displaying an emergency message

  • Marking people as safe

  • Creating a Drill or Real Event record

When an incident or drill needs to begin, select Start Roll Call.

Starting a Safety Roll Call

From the Safety Roll Call screen, select Start Roll Call.

You will then be asked to choose:

Roll Call Type

  • Evacuation

  • Invacuation

  • Lockdown

Event Type

  • Drill

  • Real Event

Send Push Notification

Enable this option to notify logged-in Custr Companion users that a Safety Roll Call has started.

Once you have made your selections, select Start Roll Call.

Starting the roll call changes Safety Roll Call from the standard on-site view to an active Safety Roll Call.

What Happens When a Safety Roll Call Starts?

Once started, the Safety Roll Call becomes active across Custr.

The Reception Kiosk and Custr Companion display a clear message showing whether an Evacuation, Invacuation or Lockdown is currently active.

During an active Safety Roll Call you can:

  • View how many people are currently on site

  • See how many people have been marked safe

  • See how many people remain to be accounted for

  • View the relevant safety procedure

  • Use Messenger to communicate with other users

  • Mark people as safe where appropriate

The active Safety Roll Call also shows who started it and how long it has been running.

Marking People as Safe

Safety Roll Call uses the people currently recorded as being on site in Custr.

This can include:

  • Employees

  • Visitors

  • Sixth Form students, where applicable

  • Other people recorded as being on site

Once a Safety Roll Call is active, people can be marked as safe as they are accounted for.

The Marked Safe and Remaining totals update throughout the event.

Evacuation and Invacuation

During an Evacuation or Invacuation, authorised Safety Roll Call users can use the roll call list to mark people as safe.

This allows designated employees, such as fire marshals or other responsible members of staff, to account for people as they reach the appropriate safe area.

Lockdown

Lockdown provides an additional way for employees to confirm who is safe.

Employees using Custr Companion can:

  • Mark themselves as safe

  • Mark people as safe, they are currently with

For example, an employee in a secure room with a colleague or visitor can account for those people through Companion.

Authorised Safety Roll Call users can still use the main roll call list to account for people in the usual way.

For more information about controlling access, see Safety Roll Call Permissions.

View Safety Procedures

A separate procedure can be added for each Safety Roll Call Type:

  • Evacuation

  • Invacuation

  • Lockdown

During an active Safety Roll Call, select View Procedure to open the procedure relevant to the current event.

This allows your organisation to provide different instructions depending on whether an Evacuation, Invacuation or Lockdown is taking place.

Messenger

Messenger is available during all three Safety Roll Call Types.

Logged-in Custr Dashboard and Custr Companion users can use Messenger to communicate during an active:

  • Evacuation

  • Invacuation

  • Lockdown

Messenger can be used to share relevant updates and information while the Safety Roll Call is in progress.

For example, during a Lockdown an employee could use Messenger to confirm that they and others are safe in a particular area.

Ending a Safety Roll Call

Once the Drill or Real Event has finished, select End Roll Call.

A Safety Roll Call can be ended from:

  • Custr Dashboard

  • Reception Kiosk

  • Custr Companion

Once ended, Safety Roll Call returns to the standard on-site view and the completed event is saved for reporting.

For more information, see Safety Roll Call Reports.

Using Safety Roll Call Offline

The Reception Kiosk stores cached roll call information locally, allowing the roll call list to remain available if the device temporarily loses its internet connection.

This can be particularly useful during an emergency where internet connectivity may be disrupted.

Once connectivity is restored, information can synchronise with Custr again.

An internet connection is required for live information to update between the Custr Dashboard and Custr Companion.

Important notes

  • The evacuation list only includes individuals currently signed in

  • Accuracy depends on the correct use of check-in and check-out processes

  • Offline mode may not reflect the latest activity across all devices

  • Permissions must be correctly configured for staff access
