Why is my iPad showing Low Battery when plugged in?

Learn why your iPad may show a low battery warning even when plugged in and how to prevent battery drain on fixed check-in devices.

Overview

If your iPad is showing a low battery warning, even when plugged in, this is usually related to the device’s power supply or usage, not the Custr app.

Custr does not prevent you from using the device at low battery, but if the iPad loses power, the check-in app will stop working until it is recharged.

Viewing Battery Status in Custr

You can monitor your device’s battery level directly from the dashboard:

  • Go to Configuration → Devices

  • View the battery status of your connected device

This can help you identify devices that are not charging correctly.

Why This Happens

This issue is typically caused by:

  • The iPad not receiving enough power

  • High battery usage (e.g. screen brightness or video backgrounds)

  • Charging through low-power sources (e.g. extension leads or desk sockets)

Common Causes and Fixes

1. Check the Power Source (Very Common)

Some desk-mounted power sources or extension leads may not provide enough power to charge an iPad effectively.

This can result in:

  • The device staying on low battery

  • The battery draining even while plugged in

Recommended:

  • Plug directly into a wall socket

  • Avoid low-power extension leads or desk-mounted outlets

2. Check the Power Adapter and Cable

  • Use a high-quality or Apple-certified charging cable

  • Ensure the power adapter provides sufficient output

  • Replace any damaged cables

3. Screen Brightness

High screen brightness can significantly increase battery usage.

Try:

  • Reducing brightness slightly

  • Using auto-brightness if appropriate

4. Background Video Usage

Using a video background on the check-in screen can increase battery consumption.

  • This is expected behaviour

  • It should not be an issue if the device is properly powered

If running on battery, consider switching to a static image background

5. Charging from Very Low Battery

If the iPad has been fully drained:

  • Leave it plugged in for 15–30 minutes

  • Allow it to recover before use

Recommended Setup for Check-In Devices

For iPads used as fixed reception devices:

  • Keep the device plugged in at all times

  • Use a direct wall power connection

  • Avoid low-power or shared outlets

  • Periodically check battery levels in the dashboard

Is This a Custr Issue?

No — this is not caused by the Custr app.

Battery warnings and charging behaviour are controlled by the iPad hardware and iOS, not Custr.

Still Having Issues?

If your device is:

  • Plugged into a wall socket

  • Using a suitable adapter and cable

  • Still not charging correctly

It may indicate a hardware issue with the iPad battery.

Important Notes

  • Custr does not block access based on battery level

  • Low battery warnings are generated by the iPad

  • Power supply issues are the most common cause

  • Video backgrounds and brightness can increase battery usage
