Overview
Contactless Check-In allows visitors and employees to check in and out without interacting directly with the reception iPad.
Instead of using the touchscreen, users scan a Contactless QR Code and complete the process using their own device.
Contactless Check-In can be used by:
Visitors
Pre-approved visitors
Invited visitors
Employees
Visitors complete the process through a secure webpage on their mobile device, while employees can use the QR scanner within the Custr Companion App.
Contactless Check-In can run alongside standard iPad check-in and is commonly used to:
Reduce queues at reception
Support self-service arrivals
Minimise shared device usage
Provide multiple check-in locations
Speed up visitor processing
How Contactless Check-In Works
Contactless Check-In uses site QR codes.
When a QR code is scanned:
Visitors
Visitors are taken to a secure webpage where they can:
Check in
Check out
Answer questions
Review documents
Complete signatures
Capture photos
Employees
Employees scan the same QR code using the QR scanner within the Custr Companion App.
The Companion App records their attendance and completes the staff check-in or check-out process.
Contactless Check-In vs Employee QR Codes
Custr supports two different QR code workflows.
Contactless Check-In
The QR code belongs to the site.
Visitors scan the QR code to open the visitor check-in webpage.
Employees scan the same QR code using the Companion App to record attendance.
Employee QR Codes
Employee QR Codes belong to an individual employee.
These QR codes are scanned by the iPad camera and provide a fast way for employees to check in and out.
For more information, see:
Dynamic QR Codes
Dynamic QR Codes are displayed directly on the iPad.
For additional security, Dynamic QR Codes automatically refresh and rotate regularly.
Dynamic QR Codes are ideal for:
Reception desks
Self-service kiosks
Temporary check-in locations
Main entrances
How to Enable Dynamic QR Codes
Navigate to Configuration > Devices
Select QRs
Enable Dynamic QR
Save your changes
Once enabled, the QR code will appear on connected iPads.
Static QR Codes
Static QR Codes allow organisations to create permanent Contactless Check-In locations around a site.
Unlike Dynamic QR Codes, Static QR Codes remain the same until they are deleted.
Common examples include:
Main Reception
Staff Entrance
Visitor Entrance
Waiting Areas
Event Spaces
Remote Buildings
How to Create a Static QR Code
Managing Static QR Codes
Once created, Static QR Codes can be:
Downloaded as an image
Downloaded as a poster
Renamed
Deactivated
Reactivated
Deleted
This allows organisations to create multiple contactless check-in points throughout a site.
Categories, Questions and Documents
Contactless Check-In uses the same visitor categories and workflows as standard iPad check-in.
This means categories can still control:
Questions
Documents
Digital signatures
Notifications
Safeguarding requirements
Photo capture
Check-out behaviour
Visitors complete the same requirements regardless of whether they use the iPad or their own device.
Photo Capture
If photo capture is enabled for a category, visitors can take a photo using their mobile device camera.
Photos captured through Contactless Check-In are stored against the visitor record in the same way as photos captured through the iPad.
Documents and Signatures
Visitors can review and sign documents directly from their mobile device.
Examples include:
Health and safety policies
Visitor agreements
Safeguarding declarations
Site rules
Terms and conditions
Completed signatures are stored against the visitor record and can be viewed later from History.
Contactless Check-Out
The same QR codes used for check-in can also be used for check-out.
Visitors
Visitors can:
Scan the QR code
Select their record
Complete any required check-out steps
Sign out
If the visitor still has the contactless webpage open, they can use the same session to check out without scanning again.
Employees
Employees can scan the Contactless QR Code through the Companion App to record a check-out.
Contactless Check-In and Express Check-In
Although they are often used together, Contactless Check-In and Express Check-In are different features.
Contactless Check-In
Allows visitors to complete the arrival process on their own device when they arrive on site.
Express Check-In
Allows invited and pre-approved visitors to complete questions, documents, signatures, and safeguarding requirements before arriving on site.
Visitors who complete Express Check-In can use Contactless Check-In when they arrive to complete the final sign-in process.
See: Express Check-In
Visitor Types Supported
Contactless Check-In supports:
Standard Visitors
Invited Visitors
Pre-Approved Visitors
The visitor journey automatically adapts based on the visitor type and category selected.
Reporting and History
Visitors who use Contactless Check-In appear throughout the platform in the same way as visitors who use the iPad.
This includes:
Dashboard
History

Evacuation View
Notifications
The sign-in method is recorded as: Contactless
This allows administrators to review and report on contactless activity.
