Student Late Arrival & Early Leave

Allow students to record late arrivals and early departures using Custr, with optional attendance writeback to supported Management Information Systems (MIS).

Overview

The Student Late Arrival & Early Leave feature allows schools to record students who arrive after registration or need to leave site before the end of the school day.

It provides an accurate record of student movement throughout the day, helping reception teams, attendance staff and safeguarding leads maintain visibility of who is currently on or off site.

Late Arrivals and Early Leavers can be managed with or without an MIS Integration. Schools using a supported MIS can also write these attendance events back automatically.

Please note: This feature is designed to record Late Arrivals and Early Leavers only. It does not replace your school's normal registration process

Where Students Can Record Attendance

Late Arrivals and Early Leavers can be recorded using:

  • The Custr iPad Check-In app

  • The Custr Dashboard (by reception or administrative staff)

This feature is not available through the Companion App.

Schools can choose whether students complete the process themselves on the iPad or whether reception staff complete it on their behalf.

Finding a Student

How students are identified depends on whether your school uses MIS Integration.

Schools using MIS Integration

Students search for and select their name from the imported student directory.

Schools without MIS Integration

Students simply type their name to record their attendance.

Please note: QR codes and RFID are available for Sixth Form Students only and are not used for standard Late Arrival or Early Leave attendance.

How the Process Works

Once a student has been identified:

  1. Select the student

  2. Choose Late Arrival or Early Leave

  3. Complete any additional questions (if configured)

  4. Select the appropriate reason

  5. The attendance event is recorded

Depending on your configuration, additional questions or document acknowledgements may also be displayed.

(Optional) Attendance is written back to the MIS

Student is marked as On Site

(Optional) Attendance is written back to the MIS

Before & After School Sessions

If your school uses Before & After School sessions, these determine when those options appear on the iPad.

Outside of these configured session times, students can record Late Arrivals and Early Leavers.

If Before & After School sessions are not configured, the Late Arrival and Early Leave options remain available throughout the day.

Reasons & Additional Questions

Students are required to select a reason when recording a Late Arrival or Early Leave.

Schools can configure:

  • MIS-linked attendance reasons

  • Custom attendance reasons

  • Free-text reasons (where appropriate)

Different questions can be configured for:

  • Late Arrivals

  • Early Leavers

Alternatively, the same questions can be shared across both workflows.

Examples include:

  • Who the student is leaving with

  • Collection arrangements

  • Additional notes

  • Custom safeguarding questions

Attendance & Evacuation

Once attendance has been recorded:

Late Arrivals

  • The student is immediately marked as On Site

  • They appear within the Dashboard

  • They appear on the Evacuation View as a Late Arrival

Early Leavers

  • The student is marked as Off Site

  • They remain visible within the Evacuation View as an off-site student

  • They remain off site until they return and check back in, or until the automatic overnight check-in automation runs (if enabled)

This helps ensure evacuation records accurately reflect who is currently on site.

Using with MIS Integration

Schools using a supported MIS benefit from additional automation.

Custr can:

  • Import students from your MIS

  • Import attendance reasons

  • Write Late Arrivals and Early Leavers back to your MIS (where supported)

Attendance writeback is supported for Late Arrivals and Early Leavers only.

For more information, see How Custr Works with Your MIS.

Using Without MIS Integration

MIS Integration is not required to use this feature.

Without an MIS connection:

  • Students can type their name manually

  • Attendance is recorded within Custr

  • Students appear correctly within the Dashboard and Evacuation View

Attendance will not be written back to an MIS.
